When New Yorker Terra Naomi posted a series of lo-fi acoustic videos from one corner of her tiny Hollywood apartment, she never expected to reach millions of people around the world. But, perhaps due to her mesmerizing voice, penetrating lyrics, and inspiring “you can do it, too!” message, tens of thousands of people have posted their own covers of Naomi’s songs on YouTube since 2006. The major record labels that courted her found this highly unusual for a relatively unknown artist. But Terra Naomi is considered by her passionate fans to be one of the music industry’s best kept secrets.
After winning the first YouTube Award for Best Music Video, Terra Naomi released her first album on Universal Island Records, and spent the next several years touring the US, UK, Europe, Russia, India, and South Africa, performing for crowds as intimate as 8 people to 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium. She has played and toured with Martha Wainwright, Sara Bareilles, Phoebe Bridgers, The Fray, Natasha Bedingfield, Matt Nathanson, and many more. Her songs have been featured in dozens of films, television shows, and commercials including “Private Practice,” “Hart of Dixie,” and “American Idol.”
“I’ve had big successes, but I’ve also fallen pretty hard, and there have been many times I wondered if I could get back up again. I’ve spent the last few years making sense of all of it, and I feel like I know who I am for the first time. I think my new music reflects that clear vision."
For her upcoming album, Terra raised $50K+ on Indiegogo, completing one of the Top 35 most successful music campaigns on the platform, and recorded at Wilco’s studio in Chicago.
You can learn a lot about the new album by the people who helped create it: Producer Tom Schick (Wilco, Iron and Wine, Rufus Wainwright), multi-instrumentalist Joe Adamik (Iron and Wine, Califone), and singer Kelly Hogan (Neko Case, Mavis Staples). This thoughtful group of artists wove a rich and delicate tapestry, sometimes lush, sometimes sparse, as classic as it is modern and fresh, full of melodies that stick in your head and lyrics that make you want to listen again – as if Joni Mitchell recorded “Court and Spark” in the musical landscape of 2017 – with Terra Naomi’s formidable voice and songwriting at the center, creating an indie-folk gem as enchanting and compelling as the artist herself.
